Diamonds grown in a laboratory possess identical physical, chemical, and optical properties, and can only be distinguished from mined diamonds by a specially-trained gemologist with machine assistance. Slight differences in trace elements or in internal microscopic growth patterns can help determine whether a diamond is lab-grown or mined. Lab-grown and mined diamonds cannot be distinguished by the naked eye alone.

COMPLEX AND RESOURCE INTENSIVE PROCESS

Lab-grown diamonds are not simple or cheap to produce, and currently, they are only a small portion of the gem-quality diamond market. The process of culturing diamonds in a laboratory requires machines that can cost over one million dollars and must be operated by highly trained technicians and PhDs. In fact, the cost of mining a diamond - estimated by De Beers in 2015 to be $104 per carat for rough diamonds - is substantially less than the cost to culture a diamond in a laboratory. The cost to cut and grade a diamond, whether lab-grown or mined, is identical. Unlike lab-grown diamonds, however, numerous middlemen in the notoriously opaque diamond supply chain progressively elevate the price of mined diamonds. Contrary to claims by the mined diamond industry, the vast majority of mined diamonds are not exceptionally rare among gem-quality materials.

The only truly ethical choice

Lab-grown diamonds are the only truly ethical and sustainable diamonds. The Kimberley Process is an imperfect certification scheme that is not only flawed due to lack of transparency in the diamond supply chain but also due to its narrow and incomplete focus on anti-government rebel groups. Moreover, the system lacks independent compliance oversight and fails to enforce significant penalties for violations.

Even if a "conflict-free" diamond is untainted by rebel violence (and this alone is difficult to ensure), the Kimberley Process offers no assurance that the cultivation of the diamond is not marred by various human rights abuses, labor exploitation, and environmental degradation.

Diamonds are formed when carbon is subjected to extreme heat and pressure. Our laboratories use the HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) method to recreate the conditions of the Earth's mantle to produce extraordinary diamonds that are chemically, structurally, and optically identical to mined diamonds, without the social and environmental harms associated with the mined diamond trade.

Rather than carbon-containing minerals, the carbon source for our Custom-Grown Organic Diamonds is a unique representation of its owner. Using extracted carbon from a lock of hair or other meaningful organic source material (flowers, photos, fabric, love letters, or any cherished memento), our laboratory creates a one of a kind diamond, with rich and distinct significance.

Carbon Extraction

For our Custom-Grown Organic Diamonds, our laboratory extracts carbon from the organic material you select, ensuring that the extracted carbon that will form your diamond is more than 99% pure. Next, the purified carbon is turned into graphite, through a process called graphitization. The purified, graphitized carbon (derived from your submitted organic material) is then used to grow your Custom-Grown Organic Diamond.

 

HPHT Growing Process

A diamond seed and the purified, graphitized carbon are placed into the diamond synthesis press and subjected to an environment that mimics the Earth's mantle, using the HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) process. The HPHT chamber reaches nearly 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit and one million PSI.

Over days, weeks, or months (depending on your desired characteristics and carat weight), the purified carbon from your submitted source material crystallizes, growing atom by atom into your Custom-Grown Organic Diamond.
